Commensal E. coli in Gut Readily Displaced by Drug-Resistant E. coli
2023-10-31
Treating infections caused by pathogenic Escherichia coli found outside the intestine (ExPEC), including urinary tract infections, is growing increasingly more challenging given the rise of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). AMR is predominant in certain E. coli strains, such as ST131, which have spread AMR globally. Now, using a gnotobiotic mouse model, researchers have shown that an MDR E. coli ST131 is capable of out-competing and displacing non-MDR E. coli from the gut in vivo.
Bacteriophages Enhance Cellular Growth and Survival for Mammalian Cells
2023-10-31
Phage interactions with bacteria are well known, and interactions between bacteria and their mammalian host can lead to a range of symbioses. However, the impact of bacteriophages on mammalian cellular and immunological processes is not well understood. Now, a new study by researchers at Monash University suggests that mammalian cells internalize phages as a resource to promote cellular growth and survival.
StockWatch: Danaher, Thermo Fisher Revenue Declines Rattle Analysts
2023-10-31
Analysts lower expectations as tools giants blame declining bioproduction orders, reduced spending by smaller biotechs, and China’s economic slowdown.Workers at Thermo Fisher scientific’s viral vector safety facility in Cambridge, MA. Marc N. Casper, Thermo Fisher’s chairman, president and CEO, cited a lack of growth in bioproduction orders, increased reluctance by customers to spend on drug and vaccine development, and shrinking revenue in China due to slowing economic activity as factors in
Nanoparticles Treat Rheumatoid Arthritis Symptoms and Restore Immune System Balance
2023-10-31
Researchers have developed a nanoparticle-based platform for treating rheumatoid arthritis (RA) that comprises ceria nanoparticles (Ce NPs) immobilized onto mesenchymal stem cell-derived nanovesicles (MSCNVs). In vivo tests showed that the combination nanohybrid Ce-MSCNV approach successfully treated and prevented RA in a mouse model of collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) by relieving the primary symptoms and inducing regulatory T cells to restore the immune system.

High-Throughput Technologies Focus
2023-10-10
A recently established contract manufacturer says that its lack of legacy equipment means the company can focus on installing high-throughput technologies. Wheeler Bio was founded as a COVID-19 laboratory to help the testing effort in Oklahoma during the pandemic. Then, in 2021, the company became a contract manufacturer.
