Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) belongs to the genus Alphavirus in the Togaviridae family. Its genome is a single-stranded positive-sense RNA. The transmission vectors are Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus (commonly known as spotted mosquitoes or black mosquitoes), which can cause chikungunya fever characterized by fever, rash, and joint pain as the main symptoms.
